Model Description
Biologic Model of Penicillin Acylase Complex created from PDB ID: 1FXV and 3D printed in full-color sandstone.
Protein Description
Penicillin acylases (PA) are widely used for the production of semi-synthetic β-lactam antibiotics and chiral compounds. The binding of penicillin to penicillin acylase was studied by X-ray crystallography. Binding of the substrate induces a conformational change, in which the side chains of alphaF146 and alphaR145 move away from the active site, which allows the enzyme to accommodate penicillin G. PA contains 2 non-identical subunits. The larger β subunit contains a phenylmethylsulfonyl residue which is required for enzymatic activity.
