Tresiba Insulin Hexamer

Tresiba Insulin Hexamer

Use this 3D printed Biologic Model of Tresiba Insulin Hexamer as a desktop reminder to take your medication before each meal.

Model Description

This is a model of the pharmaceutical drug Tresiba, insulin degludec, in its stable macro-molecule hexamer form. Tresiba is a pharmaceutical drug used in the treatment of Diabetes to lower blood glucose over a long period of time. It was created from x-ray crystallography dataset PDB ID: 4AJX and visualizes the unique binding properties and atomic anatomy of pharmaceutical insulin.

Attached to each hexamer are 6 hydrocarbon chains (blue-cyan sticks). They act like tails reaching out to a neighbor hexamer to bind. The model is colored by the protein’s bFactor, or atomic temperature. Chains A and C are stained yellow, and Chains B and D are stained green. The core of the macro-molecule shows the stable, cool binding region of each monomer, an important characteristic of natural human insulin, and enhanced in Tresiba.

Insulin is a chemical messenger produced by the pancreas in response to food. These types of proteins are called hormones, traveling throughout the body to communicate messages from one cell to another. Insulin notifies the cell to send up glucose transporters because sugar molecules are circulating through the bloodstream. When bound to an insulin receptor, this message sequesters internal stores of glucose transporters up into the plasma membrane. Once in the membrane, glucose transporters begin pumping glucose into the cell gradually lowering glucose in the blood to normal levels. An important protein for sure, you can imagine the dangers of diseases like diabetes when levels of this hormone dramatically change.

Pharmaceutical insulin is available in either fast or slow acting forms to better help patients control their blood glucose throughout their day. This is a 3D printed model of the pharmaceutical drug Tresiba, a slow acting form of insulin. Tresiba is a fascinating drug, engineered to create long, macromolecular filaments that get stored in fat.
