The Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) blood test is given to nearly every single person living with diabetes and anyone at risk of developing diabetes. It is the preferred diagnostic tool used around the world to measure a patient’s long-term self-management of diabetes. Hundreds of millions of people each year will receive this test. Yet, despite its importance, a significant percentage of the diabetes population does not understand this test nor its results. Patients frequently confuse HbA1c blood test results with acute blood sugar readings and don’t remember their most recent lab results.

Protein Description

Hemoglobin (Hb) is the protein from inside red blood cells. It gives our blood its red color and transports oxygen molecules throughout the body. If exposed to elevated levels of blood glucose for too long, glucose will permanently attach to hemoglobin, a process called glycation. Since the lifespan of a red blood cell is only ~90 days, monitoring for the presence glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) provides an ideal perspective of a patient’s self-management of blood glucose metabolism. Achieving prolonged target HbA1c scores is directly related to the reduction of diabetes-related complication.

This is the video created for the crowdfunding campaign we ran to introduce the Glycated Hemoglobin A1c Teaching Model. This model is different than most of our other protein models. Each is cast by hand by skilled fabricators. Embedded into each model are magnets. Bound to each magnet are detachable sugar molecules, magnetized to simulate the process of protein glycation. Model Description

Each model is custom-made from high-quality plastic resins by craftspeople here on the east coast. Included with each purchase is a base for the model to sit, an informational card explaining more about the protein’s function and structure. This is a limited edition series, order while supplies last.
